Kaala to Tik Tik Tik: The Tamil films you can watch once Kollywood strike is over

Rajinikanth and Jayam Ravi
Rajinikanth and Jayam Ravi
It's been 42 days since the Tamil Film Producers' Council (TFPC) announced its strike to protest against the exorbitant Virtual Print Fee (VPF) levied on every movie ticket by Digital Service Providers (DSPs).
In the last month-and-a-half, no new Tamil film saw the light of day. Headed by actor Vishal, the president of the council, TFPC declared that films will not be released by producers till Digital Service Providers like Qube reduced their Virtual Print Fee.
The latest update on the same is that TFPC has signed a new deal with a DSP called Aeroex, who have cut down the VPF rates by 50 per cent. Industry sources say that the problems will be resolved soon, and theatres will open to new Tamil films.
If everything goes fine, there is a heap of Tamil films ready to hit the screens in the coming months. For a Tamil cinema fan, it would be being spoilt for choices. We try and make the task a little less difficult for you.
Take a look at our top five picks.
KEE

A superhit from Jiiva is long overdue. The talented actor has made some bad choices in the last few years, but his upcoming film Kee looks promising. Touted to be inspired by the acclaimed British TV show Black Mirror, Kee is a psychological thriller. Director Kalees, a debutant, has directed the film.
TIK TIK TIK
Going by the trailer, Jayam Ravi's Tik Tik Tik looks like the Tamil version of Bruce Willis's Armageddon. The film is about a meteor on its way to hit India, and the people's effort to stop it from happening. If not for anything, one should watch the film for director Shakti Soundar Rajan's attempt to make the first space film of India.
IRUMBU THIRAI
A film starring even TFPC president Vishal is on hold because of the ongoing strike. Titled Irumbu Thirai, the film seems to be about data theft - a topic that has been on the tip of everyone's lips after the Facebook-Cambridge Analytica fiasco. Directed by PS Mithran, the film has Samantha and Action King Arjun in the lead roles.
KARU
Karu marks the debut of Sai Pallavi in Tamil. For Tamil fans, who were blown away by her character, Malar teacher, in the Malayalam film Premam, the film is a must-watch. Karu deals with the topic of abortion, and the trailer also promises a gripping thriller. Directed by Vijay of Thalaiva fame, Karu has been made in Telugu as well.
KAALA
It's the superstar's film; and that should be a reason in itself to make your way to the theatres. And if that reason is not enough for you to go watch Kaala, you should see it for the face-off between Rajinikanth and the incredible Bollywood actor Nana Patekar. It would also be interesting to see if Pa Ranjith has corrected the mistakes he made in Kabali. Kaala also has an interesting cast, with actors like Eshwari Rao and Huma Qureshi in the lead roles.
