OnePlus 6 listed with complete specifications on HDFC’s SmartBuy website ahead of India launch

Set for a 17 May launch in India, the OnePlus 6 had been listed on HDFC Bank’s SmartBuy shopping website, complete with a lengthy list of product specifications. The listing at the time of writing had been taken down, but we managed to get a screenshot before it went down.

What was still missing is the price, but after going through the listing, we are not too sure whether the listing was genuine to begin with. Now that the page is down, it’s clear that OnePlus’ partner jumped the gun.
The listing even shows an image of the OnePlus 6, that somehow looks misleading at best, given the fact that it looks a bit different from OnePlus’ own teasers.
For example, the display notch is massive, and in line with Apple’s iPhone X notch, very unlike the smaller one teased by OnePlus. Next up are the buttons, where HDFC seems to have played it safe and shown a smartphone with no buttons at all.
Product photos aside, there are at least some specifications to keep OnePlus 6 fans occupied with this leak.
The device according to HDFC will sport a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1800x3200 pixels, which sounds a bit fishy, considering it converts into a display with a 16:9 ratio instead of the expected 18.5:9 one, thanks to the confirmed display notch and the expected taller aspect ratio.

The rest of the specifications check out fine, with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, 8 GB RAM, 128 GB of internal storage. According to the same listing, the device will feature a 3,500 mAh battery and comes with Android 8.0 Oreo. As for the cameras, it predicts a 23 MP rear facing camera with a dual 16 MP rear cameras for the front-facing cameras, which is new news.
As far as connectivity options go, there’s the usual serving of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, GPS and 4G with VoLTE support. The battery is said to be charged using OnePlus’ proprietary Dash Charge tech which hints at the lack of a wireless charging despite the presence of a glass back.
The product listing that now appears to have been taken down, had shown up with an ‘out of stock’ label.
OnePlus as always has gone big on marketing for its annual flagship product launch. With the standard OnePlus 6 model to be launched globally on 16 May and in India and China on 17 May, the smartphone maker has also partnered with Marvel and will also announce a Marvel Avengers Infinity War edition smartphone.
The OnePlus 6 is expected to pack an IP rating for dust and water resistance and expected to feature wireless charging given the presence of a 3D curved glass back.
As far as pricing goes, the latest leaks point to a Rs 36,999 base price with the top of the line 256 GB storage variant expected to cross into the Rs 40,000 segment.

Good looks and performance combine in this next evolution of the phone meant for feasting on selfies

How much selfie is too much selfie? Chinese company Oppo would likely say it’s never enough because in this evolution of its selfie phone, they’ve put in a 25 megapixels front camera, leaving the rear camera, which we can give up calling primary, to its 16 megapixels set up.
But more on that later. First of all, the F7 a good looking phone. It’s refreshing to see smartphones having a go at looking a bit different. The Oppo F7 comes in three colours - solar red, moonlight silver, and diamond black. I had the solar red and diamond black units to explore and really liked both colours. The red is a bit strong for some, but I liked it just as it was including the glossiness and the shine of light on the back. The diamond black has a fascinating pattern built in with large triangles that change colour and even look a dark blue when they reflect the light.
There are some grumbles around from those who complain that the back isn’t made of glass, but since it looks it, that didn’t really bother me a bit. If it can make the devices a bit lighter - and they seem to - why should one complain about the absence of glass? Plastic was only awful when it looked cheap and phone makers have long since got past that.
Like anything glossy, there’s the problem of fingerprint smudges and slipperiness, but that’s hardly just particular to the Oppo phone and holds true for most. The device has a 6.2 inch one but doesn’t feel too big and you can grip it quite well.

A notch above

An early adopter of the iPhone X’s notch, the F7 has plenty of screen space with barely-there bezels just about framing the 19:9 display. The notch can be sometimes ignored and sometimes be a cause for minor irritation, depending on what’s on the screen and how it’s utilising the space. If you’re trying to look at a wallpaper full-screen it will drive you mad, but if you’re watching a video in landscape you won’t know it’s there. The screen itself is pretty nice but it’s all arranged with apps instead of letting you choose what you want to put up front from the apps drawer.
Like almost all Chinese phone companies, Oppo has its own highly customised interface. It’s so full of settings and sub settings for you to add features to the phone that I feel this device is best in the hands of someone who’s comfortable tinkering with their phones, not just shooting selfies. They’ve thrown everything they could at it, from being able to use two sets of apps to smart gestures to multitasking. There are annoyances too such as not being able to quickly change wallpapers and and use widgets on the home screens, too many notifications and ones that aren’t easy to dismiss...
I didn’t find a huge difference between the two variants, one that has 6GB of RAM and the other that has 4GB. With 128GB and 64GB of storage. Even technical benchmarks yield very similar scores. What powers the F7 variants is a MediaTek Helio P60, an octa-core chipset meant to handle artificial intelligence tasks, they say. In any case, it works smooth all the way.
Where the AI comes into play on this phone is on the front camera. All those megapixels in a Sony sensor - 25 to be exact - are aimed at shooting you nice and clear. You have an aperture of f/2.0 to work with and the rear camera is a 16 megapixel shooter with an f/1.8 aperture. Everything is fine in good light, though maybe on the slightly saturated side. The front camera can sometimes result in over exposed looking images, depending not the light. The AI kicks in to make various subtle improvements to your face, if you like that sort of thing. Phone cameras seem to be the new Fair & Lovely.
The rear camera also uses AI for scene recognition and post processing of images to make the most of or enhance what you’re shooting. I’m not very fond of this trend and prefer to have my photos untampered with, but an increasing number of phones are trying to do the job for you.
Oppo has put it just about everything Indian users like - dual SIM, micro-SD slot, FM radio, a good battery (3,400mAh) and a whole lot of features. For a mid-range phone, the F7 offers quite a lot.

PlayStation 5 release date news 2018: Sony's next-gen console to arrive sooner as PS4 sales may have already peaked

It has already been rumored that Sony is now developing the successor to the PlayStation 4 console. While the updated PS4 Pro hardware was released only two years ago, there is quite high expectation from the public that the PlayStation 5 will arrive sooner rather than later.
Sony has yet to confirm or deny that the PlayStation 5 is on the cards, but the recently reported dip in PlayStation 4 sales might be the signal to create a next-generation console.
Per the latest rumors, Sony might unveil the PlayStation 5 in 2020, at the earliest, as the PS4 is still doing good in the market. Also, the company is likely to take more time in developing a next-gen PlayStation console, considering that the PS4 Pro already has the all updated specs and features that a modern gaming platform can possibly have. Of course, things change, and the PS5's arrival might happen sooner, depending on the latest developments.
The Verge has reported that the PlayStation 4 sales may have already reached its peak. The number of sold hardware in 2017 has decreased with 19 million, which is lower than 20 million consoles sold in 2016. If the current projection remains true until the next year, the number of consoles sold in a year by March 2019 will only be around 16 million.
Still, the lowered PS4 sales is not a crippling issue for Sony, especially that the figures are only for the hardware. The company is in fact generating more money, registering a 17.8 percent increase in revenue with an opening profit of USD $1.62 billion.
Even if there are fewer PS4 consoles sold in 2017, Sony has sold more PS4 software and gained more PlayStation Plus service subscribers. Although, it is possible that Sony will take this news as a hint to start planning about the next-gen PlayStation 5 console. 
Some people believe the PlayStation 5 is already overdue, knowing that Sony first introduced the PlayStation 4 console in 2013. Like Sony, Microsoft Xbox also take many years to launch its next-gen console. The public may have to wait another three to four years before the PS4 the light of day, but with the PlayStation 4 sales experiencing a dip, it is possible that Sony will develop the hardware sooner.

Mastercard Seeks 'Fast Track' Way to Sync Blockchain Data

Payments giant Mastercard wants to patent a way to quickly add new nodes to a blockchain network, new filings reveal.
In a patent application published Thursday by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the company outlines a method by which nodes can connect with and verify the contents of a particular blockchain. Per Mastercard, the idea is to boost the speed at which the nodes - which store a copy of that network's transaction history - can get up to date.
Mastercard first filed the application back in October 2016. And as the application explains, "a blockchain may store thousands, millions, or even billions of transaction records over time in a vast number of different blocks."
While this is part of its immutable nature, this also means the blockchain could "contain thousands, millions, or billions of blocks, each of which must be verified by the new node prior to the generation and addition of new blocks to the blockchain."
The payments firm goes on to say:
"The verification of such a large number of blocks may take a significant amount of time, during which new blocks may be added to the blockchain, further delaying the ability for the new node to participate ... Thus, there is a need for a technical solution to increase the speed at which a blockchain may be navigated for verification thereof, which can thereby reduce the time required for a new node to begin participating in the blockchain."
In order to do this, the proposed system would include so-called "fast track flags" included in block headers. Nodes, per Mastercard, would be able to use those flags to scan over the blockchain's contents more quickly.
Notably, the filing also discusses using a specially configured blockchain, which would act as the software counterpart to the nodes and help enable further efficiencies.

OnePlus 6 Ceramic Back Panel Teased Officially Ahead of Formal Launch

While its formal launch is expected in a few days, OnePlus 6 has now been revealed with an all-new back panel that will enable wireless charging support. OnePlus has officially confirmed that the upcoming OnePlus 6 features "new materials". It is speculated that the smartphone will come with a ceramic back panel. This new panel is likely to make the OnePlus 6 a stronger competitor against the likes of Essential Phone and Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S that both sport a ceramic back.
A tweet by OnePlus India hinted the presence of a new back material on the OnePlus 6. "Same expert craftsmanship, new materials #OnePlus6," the tweet reads. The tweet accompanies an image that shows a glossy black surface with an engraved line that says "Designed by OnePlus". The black surface could be the ceramic back panel on the new OnePlus handset.
Unlike the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T that both had an aluminium back, the OnePlus 6 will certainly need to come with a new panel if it has to offer wireless charging - as surfaced in a leaks-based concept video. Companies such as Essential Products and Xiaomi have already used ceramic as the material on their offerings to enable wireless charging.
If not the ceramic back, the OnePlus 6 could come with a glass back. Some early rumours already give hints on this development. Moreover, a glass back on the OnePlus 6 will make it a closer competitor against the Apple iPhone X and Samsung Galaxy S9 that both come with glass back panels.
That said, we need to wait for the official launch to understand which new material the OnePlus 6 will feature. The handset will be an Amazon Exclusive in India and is expected to come with a water-resistant build. It will also come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC, coupled with up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB inbuilt storage.

It was created after the Korean War, and its main purpose was to push the country forward with domestically-made electronics. They were the first company to make Korean radios, TVs, refrigerators, washing machines and air conditioners.

How the name came to be

GoldStar had another entity named “Lak-Hui Chemical”. This part of the company was then merged with GoldStar in 1995, making the conjoint company Lucky-GoldStar, which was then shortened to LG.

The first capacitive touchscreen on a phone

Remember the days when touchscreens were resistive? This means they responded to pressure, making them highly inaccurate and non-responsive. The first smartphone to make things better and feature a capacitive touchscreen was the LG Prada, otherwise known as the LG KE850.

One of the first to use curved screens

Samsung was the first to release a phone with a curved screen (Samsung Galaxy Round), but some would argue that their attempt doesn’t really count, as the Round’s curvature doesn’t serve much of a purpose.
On the other hand, the LG G Flex was released only about a month later. Though its flexible, curved screen was there mostly for looks, there was a cool party trick LG introduced – the phone could be bent to a certain extent. Place the LG G Flex face-down on a flat surface and press it down to see the magic.
It is true this seems more like a gimmick, but it also shows the LG G Flex was a bit more resistant to abuse. Stiffer materials break, while flexible ones simply bend. Another benefit is that it is argued to fit more snug in users’ faces when making calls.

The first mainstream modular phones

Let’s fast-forward a little and talk about a more current smartphone – the LG G5. It is officially not the first modular phone (the Fairphone 2 beat it to that title), but it happens to be the first mainstream, high-end handset to implement such a design.
The LG G5 has a removable battery and supports microSD. In and of itself, that isn’t really a huge accomplishment, but they do offer optional modules that improve the experience. LG calls these modules “Friends“; they can improve the camera experience, the sound and more.

HP takes virtual reality to a new level with its ‘VR PC’

  • Virtual reality (VR) burst onto the tech scene a few years ago, but its advancements were mainly restricted to the field of gaming. Only recently has VR been inducted more seriously into the higher echelons of consumer technology. The latest example of this is Hewlett-Packard’s “VR PC”, a device that aims to take the VR experience onto a whole new level.
    This is touted as the world’s first ever wearable VR PC, and it is now available in India at a whopping Rs 3,25,000. The gadget is officially named the HP Z VR Backpack PC. According to an HP statement, “The HP Z VR Backpack PC is an ideal for product development, employee training, walk-through simulations, immersive customer experiences, and so much more.”
    The newly launched VR backpack—it was launched worldwide on 16 April—comes with add-ons like the HP Z VR compact workstation, an HP Z VR backpack dock, a 330W smart AC adapter, an HP Z VR backpack harness, two external batteries, a battery charger, a 180W smart AC adapter, and an HTC Vive combo cable and dock.
    The 4.6kg harness is light, ergonomic and comfortable to wear as a backpack. Its long-life swappable batteries allow users to dive into virtual reality in a fully wireless mode. The harness itself is made of durable, easy-fitting mesh designed to keep the user comfortable. You can also choose your preferred VR headgear to go along with it: the available options include the HTC Vive BE and the HP Windows Mixed Reality Headset. The VR PC supports multiple displays, up to four, two direct from the HP Z VR Compact Workstation and two additional via the docking solution.
    Beyond the VR features, if we look at the device’s bare-bones structure, we find a machine that is all about speed and power. The PC runs on a Windows 10 Pro edition that provides users with comprehensive security, collaboration, and connectivity features. It also sports the latest NVIDIA QuadroP5200 GPU with 16GB memory that allows you to stretch the PC’s graphic processing properties to the maximum. The PC contains by a 32GB DDR4-2400, non-ECC unbuffered SDRAM to avoid lags and hiccups, and is powered by a 7th Generation Intel Core i7 processor with dual-battery system that has a swapping power cells feature.
    According to HP, the dock that you get with the whole pack lets you quickly transition back and forth between high-powered desktop for content design and wearable VR PC to validate your creations. You can create and interact with complex simulations with a high-end performance VR gadget and the latest high-fidelity graphic card. The VR backpack solution features Intel vPro with iAMT, TPM 2.0 security and a commercial BIOS. HP claims, “The rugged, wearable VR PC that stands up to extreme durability with 120,000 hours of HP testing and is designed to pass MIL-STD 810G tests.”
    The PC comes with numerous ports that include one HMD power port, two USB 3.0; one HDMI 2.0; one mini DisplayPort™ 1.3; one Thunderbolt™ (USB Type-C™ connector); one headphone/microphone combo, one dock connector, two external battery power ports, two USB 3.0 and one DC-in power connector.
    “The HP Z VR Backpack,” says HP’s official press statement, “uses the white LED HP logo and LED light bar located on the PC unit top to report the status of the internal and external battery charge levels. The reporting behaviour of battery charge level status is dependent on the HP Z VR backpack PC system BIOS revision level… For maximum performance while in battery operation mode, the external batteries must be charged. If they fall below a certain threshold depending on the system BIOS revision level on the PC unit, the VR experience will quickly become suboptimal and compromised if the external batteries are not swapped with charged battery replacements.”

    Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium Revealed: Sony's Most Amazing Phone Yet

    This week, with sales just beginning of the Sony Xperia XZ2, the first Sony phone with wireless charging, and the smaller Xperia XZ2 Compact, (both were announced in February) Sony has just unveiled a larger, more powerful phone and one that seems certain to turn heads. And it made the announcement with a level of discretion surprising given how big a deal this phone is.The Xperia XZ2 is a great phone and I'll be reviewing it shortly, but Sony has had this one up its sleeve. I think this because in February at the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona, Sony talked about an image signal processor which was so powerful it could capture 'more than the human eye can see'. At the time, many were confused about what this really meant, not least because it wasn't on the two phones the company announced alongside this processor. Watch this space, we thought, though it seemed likely we'd have to wait until the Fall or even next year, for the next Xperia flagship.
    But, no, Sony has now announced the Xperia XZ2 Premium and with it the new signal processor and much more.

    The XZ2 Premium, for instance, has a full 4K HDR display - something Sony had introduced last year on the XZ Premium but which was noticeably absent from this year's XZ2 models in February. This is a bigger phone, like last year's Premium was, with a 5.8in display. But this phone follows the new, glossy, curvy-backed design of the other XZ2s with smaller bezels than on previous Xperia phones, even if they're not as minimalist as on the iPhone X or Samsung Galaxy S9.
    But the other specs on the XZ2 Premium are arguably so advanced as to trounce most of the phones available now.
    Not just the 4K HDR display which, assuming it's as good as it was last year on the XZ Premium, will be gorgeous. And like last year's Premium, by the way, this one will have a 16:9 screen ratio.

    Anyway, there's also the cameras. Now, Sony has consistently had strong cameras on its phones, not least because its sensors are cutting-edge (and Sony makes camera sensors for rival manufacturers, too).
    Here, Sony has deployed twin sensors for the first time on the rear of the phone - one 19MP color sensor, one 12MP monochrome. This is an intriguing way round to do it. Huawei, for instance, has sometimes included a higher-resolution black-and-white sensor to pull in all the sharp detail quickly and use a lower-resolution RGB sensor for color fidelity.
    The signal processor, called AUBE fusion, is designed to work in remarkably low light, offering an ISO of 51,200 which, if it works, should be pretty amazing.
    And like last year's Premium and this year's XZ2, the new phone will have super-slo-mo at a rate of 960fps - though there's no mention of the clever automatic shutter for super slow motion, as found on the Samsung Galaxy S9.
    Still, this phone also boasts the feature that was a first on the XZ2: 4K HDR movie recording.
    Sony
    The front camera on the XZ2 Premium is obviously aimed at superior selfies, because it's a 13MP sensor.
    Like the XZ2, there's a fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone. Some previous Xperia phones have lacked fingerprint sensors in some places, most notably the USA but this model has one and it's likely to work everywhere.
    I say everywhere, but the phone has not yet been confirmed for some territories, notably the UK, but it seems likely to be available in the USA this summer, though not on Sprint or Verizon as there's no CDMA variant announced. No price is set but it'll be certain to outprice the Xperia XZ2.
    Sony had waterproofing as standard before almost all its rivals, and has more recently made phones with batteries that not only lasted longer on a day-to-day basis but had smart conditioning to last better over the life of the product, too.
    With these features and the newly improved styling of the XZ2, the larger Xperia XZ2 Premium has remarkable potential.
