The Indian Premier League (IPL) has completed 10 years of wonderful existence in our lives. Every April-May almost everyone in India and many people around the world get to see some of the most brilliant cricketing talents and stars from almost all international teams in the world, come together on one platform. Their performances have made IPL the most favoured cricketing leagues around the world in terms of viewership and player participation. With more than 1100 players signing up for the IPL 2018 edition auction; IPL 2018 is set to become bigger and better.
With that, let’s have a look at 11 little-known facts about the IPL:
- IPL is now worth $5,500 million after the Star India deal. Star India agreed to pay to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Rs16,347.5 crore for five years for the global media rights—both digital and television, of the league.
- Zaheer Khan is the only player to be part of both the 1st and 500th match of IPL. He played for RCB in the 1st game against KKR, and for DD against RR in the 500th.
- In 2013 Dale Steyn bowled 212 dot balls, highest by any bowler. In total, he bowled 407 balls in that season, more than 50% dot balls.
- Delhi Daredevils is the only team that has never played an IPL final.
- Suresh Raina has missed just one match in IPL; the match was against Royal Challengers Bangalore and he was with Gujarat Lions team in IPL 2016. He has played 161 matches in IPL so far; playing 132 matches for CSK and 29 matches for GL.
- Manish Pandey and Robin Uthappa have played in 4 teams, but they have always been together on the same side. They have played together for MI in 2008, for RCB in 2009 and 2010, for PWI from 2011 to 2013 and for KKR since 2014.
- Kieron Pollard (123) and AB de Villiers (101) are the only two overseas players to play more than 100 matches for a single franchise.
- Bhuvneshwar Kumar is the only bowler to win back to back purple caps for most wickets in an IPL season. He took 23 wickets in IPL 2016 and 26 wickets in IPL 2017, both for Sunrisers Hyderabad.
- Sachin Tendulkar (2010- Mumbai Indians) and Virat Kohli (2016- Royal Challengers Bangalore) are the only two Indian players to win the Most Valuable Player award in Indian Premier League history.
- Virat Kohli has been part of 3 double century partnerships in IPL. He added 229 with AB de Villiers in IPL 2016 against Gujarat Lions, added 215* with AB de Villiers in IPL 2015 against Mumbai Indians and added 204* with Chris Gayle against Delhi Daredevils in IPL 2012.
