CBSE Class 10, Class 12 results 2018 won't be delayed: Find likely date

May 04, 2018

2018, CBSE Class 12 result are unlikely to be delayed due to the re-examinations held on account of the infamous CBSE paper leaks. Nearly a month after the CBSE exam question papers were leaked, the re-test of the Class 12 Economics paper took place on April 25. "The results will be declared on time as the evaluation is in advanced stage despite re-exam of economics paper. We have rigorously followed up with schools to send more evaluators than the required number," a senior Board Official said. There were also reports of the CBSE's Class 10 mathematics paper being leaked, but the board decided against its re-test, saying class 10 was just an "internal segment" of school system. The reports of the leak of the CBSE papers had caused disappointment among students across the country last month. In Delhi, students held protests accusing the CBSE of negligence and demanded immediate action against the guilty.

Malpractices in exams threaten the future of Indian education

The layers are coming off the mystery surrounding the scams carried out during the entrance exams for the Staff Selection Commission. The case with the malpractices during the CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) board exams is similar.
A retired official who once led an investigation into a similar case believes it is a quagmire: the more one digs, the more dirt one is likely to find.
Playing with the future of young people is not a new tradition. Let me share a personal story with you.
I completed high school in 1975 at Mainpuri, a small town in Uttar Pradesh. My school was affiliated with the Board of High School and Intermediate Education, Uttar Pradesh. At that time it was reputed to be the biggest board in the country. My centre for exams was at the Sri Chitragupta Inter College. Located in the middle of Mainpuri, the college was surrounded by shops and commercial establishments where the town’s disreputable characters assembled during the exams. Their own educational credentials may have been questionable but when it came to helping others cheat in exams, they enjoyed a cult status.
Students who took it easy through the year were eager to grease their palms during the exam season. There were others who spent the entire year worshipping them. Apart from the entertainment, there was a guarantee that they would help them sail through. Some students from the town addressed them as khalifa (don). Before the exam they would strike a deal with an invigilator, peon, teacher, or clerk so that the question paper was sent out immediately after distribution. On the streets outside youngsters awaited the emergence of these question papers. As soon as they received the question paper, it was handed over to a senior student or teacher who would begin solving it. The solved question papers were then wrapped over pebbles and thrown into the school complex, where they reached the recipient. Such was the reputation and fear of these dons that the operation was completed without any hitch.
This was the scenario when Emergency had been imposed in the country. Vinoba Bhave, the national saint, had described it as anushasan parva (time for discipline) around the same time.
The situation was tragic for students like us who felt contempt for those cheating in exams. We were hit hard from both sides. On one side was the fear of lagging those who indulged in cheating. On the other, those correcting copies sitting in remote districts marked the papers strictly. They were not wrong. Certain districts were infamous for cheating and every candidate came under suspicion. The innocents got tainted for no fault of their own.
Despite all this, I believe those days were better because cheating in exams and corruption in competitive exams was just a social evil. It had not yet assumed the status of an industry.
These malpractices have evolved into an established industry in certain North Indian states. When a Nitish Kumar or Yogi Adityanath orders a crackdown on cheating, most students can’t even summon the courage to take the exams. The drop in the number of candidates and results last year in both states was because of these measures.
You may have noticed that immediately after the results certain people alleged that this was a failure of governance. This is a time-tested ploy. During the reign of Kalyan Singh, this lobby was so strong that it even left an adverse impact on the election results. Since then, politicians have avoided intervening in these matters. Not just this, some of them has personally benefited from this.
A recent survey conducted by the non-profit Pratham revealed that one in 10 children aged between four years and 18 years could not read textbooks for Class I or Class II in their native language. These were books prescribed for children aged between five and seven. Not just this, 36% of students in rural India didn’t even know the name of their national capital. As many as 57% of students in this age group couldn’t carry out divisions of three-digit numbers.
Until when will this catastrophic crisis in our education continue? Why are India’s lawmakers, who are ready to take umbrage at the drop of a hat, silent on this serious matter?

NEET exam: CBSE issues dress code

April 21, 2018
NEW DELHI: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has come out with the dress code for students taking the upcoming NEET exam. While issuing the admit cards for the National Eligibility-cum Entrance Test (NEET) for students willing to pursue MBBS and BDS at medical colleges, the board has advised candidates to come in “light-coloured halfsleeves dress” and “not to wear shoes”.

Reiterating the dress code it announced in 2017, the board has added that the candidates will have to report at the exam centre an hour earlier in case they choose to wear their “customary dress”. The CBSE had attracted a lot of criticism last year when students were forced to remove their head scarves to gain entry into the exam halls, leading to protests.
According to the dress code, the candidates will have to wear “light clothes with half sleeves, not having big buttons, brooch/badge, flower etc. with salwar/ trouser,” and “slippers, sandals with low heels and not the shoes,” to the exam centre. The NEET exam will be conducted on May 6, from 10am to 1pm. “The schedule will remain unaltered even if the date of the test is declared a public holiday,” CBSE said in a statement.

It has also barred students from carrying communication devices to the exam centres. The board said that no arrangement would be made at the centres for keeping any items belonging to the candidates. Other restricted items include geometry/pencil box, handbags, belt, cap, ornaments, watch and any other metallic item.

PUC classes will start early; CBSE students can join later

April 18, 2018

Mangaluru: The Department of Pre-University Education (DPUE) is firm that academic year 2018-19 will start from May 2 for II PU and May 14 for I PU.
However, C Shikha, director, DPUE, said as CBSE results would be announced on May 28, they could join classes later since colleges would be teaching the bridge course and CBSE students did not need them.

Soon after publication of the academic calendar, there was criticism that it was illogical for students and teachers alike.

Shikha said the decision was taken in the interest of students. There’s no loss of classes or lessons for CBSE students whose results will be out on May 28. Till they (CBSE students) take admissions to PU colleges, other students coming from state boards will be doing a bridge course and an introduction to NCERT. “However, CBSE students don’t require this since they are already exposed to NCERT syllabus. It’s not right to say they (CBSE students) will miss classes,” she added.

Countering MLC Capt Ganesh Karnik’s claim that the harsh summer will affect students if classes commence early, Shikha said, “In Mangaluru, many private colleges have commenced II PU classes soon after the I PU examination. Don’t they get affected by summer? Are only government college students fragile?”

Fr Melwin Mendonca, principal, St Aloysius PU College, said that advancing the academic calendar is highly impractical. Listing problems on behalf of his and other PU colleges, he said that firstly, it’ll lead to attendance shortage problem for late joiners. Secondly, not all CBSE students are as studious as others and hence they may not be able to grasp lessons already done. Thirdly, colleges in Dakshina Kannada receive students from outside the state, whose results are declared in June, where they will miss classes and lastly, PU staff won’t get enough time to relax due to elections, valuation and re-exams of first PU.

“All these factors may hamper candidates, who join classes at a later date. It’s better if the academic year starts in June,” he added.

Narendra Nayak, chairman, Expert Educational and Charitable Foundation, said it’ll be inconvenient for many students, including CBSE, if classes start on May 14. “This (academic calendar) is scientifically not correct,’’ he added.

Ananth Prabhu G, adviser, Vikas Group of Institutions, said the calendar will make the academic year go haywire. “There would have been no issues if we were told in advance about the plan. Currently, everyone is confused and left in the lurch because this will hamper vacations of staff as well as students.”

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court today dismissed a plea seeking rescheduling of the re-examination of the class 12th economics paper, which the CBSE has decided to conduct on April 25 following an alleged leak.
The court also asked the CBSE to place before it the records relating to the board's decision not to conduct the re-examination of class 10th mathematics examination, which also was allegedly leaked, after a plea seeking a re-test came up.
The bench asked the CBSE advocate to find out the reasons for the decision for not reconducting the examination and listed the plea filed by a student for April 20.

A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar rejected the plea filed by an NGO, Suniye, seeking to either change the date of re-examination of class 12th exam or make it optional on the ground that the decided date was close to some entrance examinations, including National Defence Academy (NDA) and engineering.
The court said it was the CBSE's decision to reconduct the exam and was outside its purview.
The bench said a judicial notice has been taken of the fact that there can be no date fixed to the satisfaction of all and rescheduling of the re-test was beyond the jurisdiction of the court.
"Whether to hold an exam or not, it is up to the CBSE. It is not up to the court to decide. It is outside our purview. As you are saying NDA exam is clashing. If they again change the date, somebody else will come. On what basis a court can say hold the exam on this day and not on that day. It will be anarchy," the court said.
During the hearing, the court was informed by CBSE advocate Amit Bansal that it has issued a notification that class 10th maths examination will not be reconducted as they cannot afford to hold it again and make over 16 lakh students appear in it.
The board also opposed the intervention application of the NGO saying it has considered all the aspects before scheduling the class 12th economics exam on April 25 and due care was taken while selecting the date.
The court was hearing a PIL, in which NGO Social Jurist had sought that CBSE be directed to hold the class 10 exam in April, if required, and not in July as it had proposed earlier.
It disposed of the PIL after NGO's counsel Ashok Agarwal said he was satisfied with the board's decision of not holding the re-examination for the class 10th paper.
The CBSE, in its affidavit, had earlier said it had decided not to hold re-examination of class 10 Maths test as a scientific evaluation of random answer sheets did not indicate any unusual pattern to believe that there was a widespread benefit of the alleged paper leak.
It had said it was not conducting the re-test for another reason that class 10 was a gateway to class 11 and therefore "remains largely an internal segment of school education system".
The NGO had also sought a court-monitored probe into the recent leak of the Maths and Economics question papers of class 10 and 12 respectively.
